Coronavirus Causes Massive Layoffs Across the Balkans – BIRN

Hundreds of thousands of workers in the Balkans have been laid off because of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to official statistics.

The Republika Srpska said some 2,400 people had lost their jobs in the entity by the end of April, 1,100 of which were on temporary contracts. However, 870 had joined the ranks of newly employed, too, the entity Prime Minister, Radovan Viskovic, said over the weekend.

In the Federation, almost 25,000 people lost their jobs from March 16 until April 21, the entity tax administration said. Some 10,000 of them had applied for state financial assistance.
