United States Vice President Joe Biden reportedly spoke with Croatia’s prime minister this week to ask Croatia to end its opposition to Serbia’s EU accession process. Croatia has repeatedly blocked the opening of Chapter 26 of Serbia’s accession agreement with the EU. Croatian PM Plenkovic denied that this had been the purpose of Mr. Biden’s call. Serbian PM Aleksandar Vucic announced earlier this week that he was leaving Brussels in protest due to Croatia’s obstructionism.
Asked where his conversation with Biden touched on the blockade of Serbia, he said this was discussed “only very generally” – and, as Plenkovic said, the conversation was “not about the blockade but about what he spoke about, in connection with the process of accession talks and the intent of Croatia to be of assistance to neighbors.”
