The SNSD–currently the governing party in Republika Srpska–emerged from Sunday’s local elections as the dominant party in RS. Elections in 2012 were something of a setback for the party, which saw the rival Serbian Democratic Party (SDS) take mayoral posts and other seats across the entity. This time, the SNSD won at least 30 mayoral elections.
In the Federation of BiH, the Bosniak-majority SDA did well, but not nearly as well as in previous elections.
In the mainly Bosniak and Croat Federation entity, the coalition led by the main Bosniak pary, the Party of Democratic Action, SDA, triumphed again in most municipalities, winning 33 mayoral posts. However, compared to the 2012 election results, the SDA has 12 fewer mayors in the country.
“We cannot talk about a grand victory but we can talk about victory,” Bakir Izetbegovic, leader of the SDA, said late on Sunday evening.
The Croatian Democratic Union, HDZBiH, won 16 mayoral posts, while the Social Democratic Party, SDP, won eight.
