In a statement released today, High Representative Valentin Inzko noted that December 22 marks six years since the European Court of Human Rights issued its judgement in the Sejdic-Finci case, ruling that the exclusion of ethnic “others” from public office in BiH is illegal. Since then, as HR Inzko notes, leaders in BiH have failed to amend the constitution and election laws to correct the problem, despite many rounds of political summits aimed to doing so.
“The Sejdic-Finci ruling is about making sure that every citizen in BiH enjoys the same rights to participate in public life. It is about removing discrimination from the society. Implementation of this ruling would be a sign of maturity of the BiH institutions, and a proof of their dedication to tolerance and openness.”
