The SDS and its partners in the opposition walked out of the Republika Srpska National Assembly on Tuesday, and said they planned to boycott until the ruling bloc accepts the SDS nominee for the deputy president’s position. SDS wants Sonja Karadzic-Jovicevic, daughter of wartime leader Radovan Karadzic, to take over as deputy president from Nenad Stevandic, a former SDS member who now caucuses with the ruling coalition.
Under the assembly’s rules, the post belongs to the main opposition party in the entity. However, the ruling bloc rejected the motion during an assembly session on Tuesday.
After five hours of bitter debate, the opposition bloc was outvoted and its MPs left the session, announcing that they will return only once Stevandic is replaced.
