Republika Srpska’s constitutional court ruled today that the planned referendum on the BiH-level judiciary does not constitute a threat to the “vital national interests” of Bosniaks in RS, which the Bosniak caucus in the entity House of Peoples had invoked to block the vote. In its ruling, the court said that the referendum was not inherently discriminatory against any ethnic group.
[RS President] Dodik told local media on Wednesday that the decision of the constitutional court was expected and the veto was “unnecessary”.
But he added that there was still a chance to stop the referendum if “significant progress is made” at this week’s ‘structured dialogue’ on justice between the EU and representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“We want quick solutions. They cannot be drawn-out solutions. We never said we will back down from our promise to hold a referendum, but we are willing to try and find a solution in the structured dialogue,” Dodik told reporters.
