Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic has won the Croatian presidency after a tight runoff vote, in which support from Croatians abroad proved decisive. Roughly half of the ballots cast by Croatians in the diaspora came from BiH, where Kitarovic campaigned last month. Of these voters, Kitarovic won over 93%.
Since Grabar Kitarovic won by a mere 32,435 votes in total, the 91.11 per cent of Diaspora votes that she won – 33,737 votes – were an important factor.
An especially large part of these votes came from neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina, where Grabar Kitarovic won 93.8 per cent of the votes, 16,160 votes in total.
In the southwestern Bosnian city of Mostar, people voted in especially significant numbers.
Grabar Kitarovic won in almost all countries with a substantial Croat community, such as Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Switzerland and the US.
