Serbia’s Special Court on Monday sentenced former Bosnian police officer Ilija Jurisic to 12 years in prison for ordering an infamous 1992 attack on a column of JNA forces that were withdrawing from Tuzla under a negotiated agreement. According to information presented during Jurisic’s trial, 51 soldiers were killed and at least 50 killed in the attack.
This is the second time that this case is before the Special Court, as in 2009 the same court sentenced Jurisic to 12 years of prison for criminal acts of usage of illegal means of combat, but the Appellation Court quashed this ruling in 2010 and remitted the case for a retrial, allowing Jurisic to defend from liberty.
Jurisic had been arrested at Belgrade Airport in 2007 on the basis of an international warrant issued by Serbia.
