It was confirmed today that BiH parliament would be in recess from today through August 16. However, lawmakers do not expect to have much to do after the 16th, since the BiH Constitutional Court is not expected to rule on a challenge to the constitutionality of recently-adopted laws until mid-September.
Parliament recently passed a suite of laws, including the long-awaited law on unique identification numbers, but a small caucus of MPs from the SDA claimed that the manner in which the laws had been adopted threatened the “vital national interest” of Bosniaks, a claim which automatically triggers a constitutional review. Until the Court rules on these laws, parliament will not be able to finalize them. This delay could effectively lengthen the parliamentary recess through the middle of September.
