The Council of Ministers of BiH today adopted and sent to parliament a new draft law on the provision of unique personal identification numbers. The previous failure of lawmakers to agree on a draft law was the root cause of massive protests in Sarajevo and elsewhere, which in some instances included blockades and forced closures of government institutions.
With the proposal of this law, the registration areas are adapted to the territorial organization of BiH in accordance with the Constitution and the electoral law, which practically means that there are ten registration areas along entity lines and Brcko District, in other words three in Republika Srpska, one in Brcko District, and five in the Federation.
The Council of Ministers also agreed on laws on citizenship, residence, and travel documents, which will also be forwarded to parliament with the ID law.
