Speech by Štefan Füle to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe – EU

In his speech yesterday, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Füle reiterated the position that the failure of BiH authorities to implement the Sejdic-Finci ruling is holding BiH back from EU candidacy and from other assistance. Mr. Füle said that Europe would not lower its bar for membership to accommodate BiH, and that upcoming elections would not be seen as “meeting European standards” if the issue is not resolved ahead of time.

RS President Dodik said that he agreed completely with Commissioner Füle’s statements, and that the EU’s position on the matter is “more than fair.” Mr. Dodik stressed the fact that he has put forward implementation plans already.

I expect we will sit at the table and give a constructive contribution to drafting legislation that would satisfy the decision of the Court in Strasbourg. It is clear that our proposal meets the requirements of the decision. We expects that other actors will not use this problem for opening some other political issues, and that we will all give our maximum, aware of the situation’s seriousness.
